The bid for an indoor archery club is one step closer after the West Tamar Council advertised the development application. Paringa Archery Club has been working towards an indoor range since moving to the Trevallyn Reserve in the 80s. The club plans to build a shed, 30 metres long and 16 metres wide, to use as an indoor range and is expected to cost about $120,000, but the club has budgeted more. “We have a budget of $160,000, the Tas Community Fund has offered $90,000 and the West Tamar Council is helping us out with $3300 for earth works,” Club treasurer Jeff Garner said. “We’ve got about $60,000, so we’re very close.” Mr Garner said the club was hoping to get another grant to cover its monthly costs. The club shoots all-year-round, and often has to hire halls to hold tournaments. “We decided that we wanted to get an indoor facility that was suitable to use 24/7 and that we could use for both community groups, and for our tournaments,” he said. “We do a lot of school and public groups during the week and we’ve found that over winter, obviously with the rain and weather, that it was really hard for them to come.” Mr Garner said having an indoor range would “definitely” grow the club. “Members will be able to shoot no matter what the weather is and we’ll be able to hold more tournaments there at any time of the year,” he said. “(The members) are all looking forward to it and think it’s a great idea.” The indoor range has been part of the club’s original master plan, but haven’t had the funds to complete the project. “We can’t start anything until the summer months because of the weather … So we’ll start looking at it after Christmas,” Mr Garner said. “The council still haven’t given us approval. They’ve put the sign up to say we want to, but they haven’t actually given us approval to build it yet. “We’ve already spent $10,000 for designs and building and to not have the go ahead to say we can build would be heartbreaking.” Submissions against the development closed on July 24.
